Water Testing and Science

How to test your water hardness at home. Test strips, digital TDS meters, and certified lab kits compared for accuracy and value.

Why You Should Test Before Buying Anything

Water hardness varies enormously even within the same city and sometimes between different parts of the same neighborhood. Before spending money on a shower filter or water softener, you should know your actual hardness level. A $12 test strip kit takes 60 seconds and tells you exactly what you are dealing with.

Check Your City Report (Free)

Your city water utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report with hardness data. Search "[your city] CCR water quality report" to find it instantly.

Test Strip ($12 to $27)

Dip in water for 2 seconds, compare color to chart. Not lab-accurate but sufficient for deciding which treatment you need. Best budget option.

Digital TDS Meter ($15 to $30)

Measures total dissolved solids. Correlates with hardness but is not a direct measure. Useful for monitoring softener output.

Certified Lab Test ($40 to $150)

Mail-in kit from Tap Score or similar. Most accurate. Measures specific mineral concentrations, not just total hardness. Recommended if you are buying a whole-house softener.
