How to Remove Limescale from Every Surface
The comprehensive method guide for shower heads, glass, tiles, kettles, washing machines, and dishwashers.
Read the guideProven methods for removing limescale, hard water stains, and soap scum from every surface in your home, using products you already own or inexpensive cleaners.
The key insight: Limescale is calcium carbonate, which is alkaline. Acids dissolve it. White vinegar (acetic acid) and citric acid both work. The longer you let the acid contact the scale, the less scrubbing you need.
Hard water deposits form when water evaporates and leaves its dissolved minerals behind. The white, crusty buildup you see around your faucets, shower head, kettle, and glass is primarily calcium carbonate (limescale). Soap scum is different: it forms when the fatty acids in soap react with the calcium and magnesium in hard water, creating an insoluble gray film.
Fill a plastic bag with undiluted white vinegar. Submerge the shower head in the bag and secure with a rubber band. Leave for 1 to 8 hours depending on buildup severity. Rinse and run water for 30 seconds.
Spray undiluted white vinegar on the glass. Let sit 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub with a non-scratch sponge. For heavy buildup, make a paste of baking soda and dish soap, apply, let sit 20 minutes, then scrub.
Fill halfway with equal parts white vinegar and water. Boil, then let sit 30 minutes. Empty, rinse twice, and boil with plain water once to remove any vinegar taste.
Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum and run an empty hot cycle. Monthly use prevents scale buildup. For heavy buildup, use a commercial descaler product like CLR or Affresh on a hot cycle.
Place a bowl of white vinegar on the bottom rack and run a hot cycle empty. Follow with a cycle using a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher. Monthly maintenance prevents scale from accumulating.
Soak a paper towel in white vinegar and press against the faucet base. Leave for 30 minutes to 2 hours. For grout and tile, use CLR spray for stubborn stains, avoiding contact with natural stone.
